Hawthorn  Crataegus species

Dense tree or shrub with small, sharp thorns. Height up to 25 feet. Fruit: Bright red, round berries 1/3 inch in diameter, with one large seed. Native to Europe with related species in North Africa and Western Asia.

Hibiscus  Hibiscus sabdariffa

Erect, mostly branched annual with a dark green to red stem. It has alternate, glabrous leaves that are palmately divided into 3-7 lobes. Flowers are large, red to yellow, with dark centers, followed by a large red calyx surrounding seed pods. Height: Up to 3.5 meters.

Hops  Humulus lupulus

The stem twines from left to right, and, although no fruit forms until the 3rd year, the root is strong and perennial. Leaves resemble grape leaves, and male and female flowers grow on separate plants. Flowers are green-yellow catkins. Blooms July-August.

Horehound  Marrubium vulgare

Branching stems give horehound a bushy look. It has white flowers in dense whorls and opposite, paired leaves that are long, soft, hairy and rounded. It produces barbed seeds that contain nutlets clustered in fours. Height: 2-3 feet. Blooms in summer.

Horse Chestnut  Aesculus hippocastanum

Deciduous tree with large, domed crown, having clusters of pink and white flowers in summer, followed by spiny, green fruits containing medicinal seeds. Height: Up to 80 feet. Blooms: May-June

Horseradish  Armoracia rusticana

Long, white, tapering root produces a 2-3 foot high stem in the 2nd year. It has abundant leaves that are long stalked and oblong toward the root and smaller, lanceolate and short stalked near the top. Flowers are small and white with terminal racemes from the leaf axils.

Horsetail  Equisetum arvense

Fern-like perennial with a rhizome that looks like a string of beads. Flowers top stalks during its fertile stage, and the leaves are sharp-toothed ringed leaf sheaths that occur along a bamboo-like stalk. During the infertile stage, leaves are needle-like in whorls.

Shrub with green oval-oblong leaves covered with resin dots. Clusters of red flowers are followed by black berries in midsummer. Height: 1-3 feet. Blooms: Mid-late spring

Open, deciduous shrub with toothed leaves up to 7 inches long. Off-white fertile flowers and creamy white sterile flowers are borne in corymbs 2-6 inches across in summer.

Hyssop  Hyssopus officinalis

Upright, many-branched square stems, with blue or violet flowers in whorls having tubular, bell-shaped calyxes. The leaves are opposite and hairless, and it produces four nutlets as fruit. Height: 2-3 feet. Blooms June-August.
